From Learnership to Leadership: Muke Buthelezi’s Inspiring Career Journey

Born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, Muke holds a BSc in Applied Chemistry. Muke faced a common hurdle: a lack of confidence in public speaking and corporate presentations, holding her back from her full potential. That changed in 2023 when Muke joined the Medical Sales Representative Learnership, delivered by Diverse Conversations in partnership with Novartis.

“The learnership bridged the gap between theoretical university work and the practical workplace,” Muke explains. “I developed professional skills, built vital soft skills, understood workplace etiquette, and learned to understand the health products industry.”

The program immersed Muke in hands-on pharmaceutical operations. She mastered everything from analyzing medical data and communicating complex information to understanding regulatory compliance, ethical practices, and consultative selling. Crucially, the daily collaboration and mentorship from seasoned professionals allowed her to build a vital industry network while conquering her fear of public speaking.

Muke's career progression after the program was remarkably swift. Within just ten days of completing her learnership, she secured her first permanent role as a Pharmacovigilance and Quality Agent. Only eight months later, she was promoted to her current role as a Pharmacovigilance Associate at Clinigen.

Reflecting on her journey, Muke emphasizes that learnerships are essential for South Africa’s broader economic development.

“Investing in and mentoring graduates creates productive workers while driving meaningful economic transformation,” she notes. “Learnerships are a strategic win-win because they help companies’ close critical skills gaps, strengthen their B-BBEE scorecards, and build loyal talent tailored to their culture.”

To graduates still searching for their breakthrough, Muke offers practical advice: “Do not wait for your dream job to start your career. Take any opportunity that comes your way and utilize it wisely. Every professional environment helps you develop soft skills and build references.”
