The purpose of this accredited qualification is to prepare individuals to act as a bridge between communities and the primary healthcare system. This qualification enables learners to contribute to disease prevention, health awareness, and early detection in alignment with national health priorities and community-based care strategies.

Learnership Duration: 12 - 18 Months

NQF Level 5 - 163 Credits (1630 Notional Hours)

Notional Hours split into:

Self-paced online e-learning, Virtual Classrooms, In-real-life practical days, Implementing Knowledge in the Workplace, Time Spent on Portfolio of Evidence (PoE), Assessment and Feedback Sessions

HPO Qualification Outcomes

​The learners completing the qualification will be able to:

  1. Educate individuals and communities about health, hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention

  2. Promote healthy lifestyles and positive health-seeking behaviors

  3. Identify health risks and refer individuals to appropriate healthcare services

  4. Support chronic disease management through follow-up and patient education

  5. Conduct basic health screenings and household assessments

  6. Facilitate access to healthcare services by navigating health systems and resources

  7. Record and report health-related data accurately to inform planning and interventions

  8. Engage communities in health campaigns and awareness programs

  9. Apply principles of primary healthcare, health promotion, and communication

  10. Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team

  11. Respect and uphold ethical, cultural, and legal aspects of community health work

If learners already have a qualification in public health, community health, nursing, or a related field, there is a strong chance they can be RPL’d for some of the Knowledge Modules in this Qualification

HPO - % Time Spent Breakdown

The time spent learning is split into Online Self-Paced Learning (by themselves), virtual classrooms and In-real life sessions (With Us, Diverse Conversations). The time spent on workplace tasks is the time spent with the approved workplace company (With You), which will give the learners the necessary experience to successfully complete this qualification.

As we have not implemented the Health Promotions Officer Qualification just yet, we cannot give an accurate estimation of the % Time Spend Table at this time

HPO Qualification Curriculum Content

The Qualification has been structured around the Curriculum Document as a standard from  CHIETA and QCTO. For you, as a business entity, to claim your B-BBEE skills development points, learners are required to complete Knowledge Modules (KM's), Practical Modules (PM's) and Workplace Modules (WM's).

Knowledge Subjects (KS's)

serve as the foundational learning components that provide learners with the theoretical understanding required for effective performance in the role.

Implemented Month 1

NQF 3 (40 credits)

Total Notional Hours = 400 hrs

  • KS01: Public and Community Health Support

  • KS02: Family and Community Services

  • KS03: Basics of Community Health

Practical Modules (PM's)

are designed to develop the hands-on skills needed to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, bridging the gap between classroom learning and workplace performance.

NQF 3 (63 credits)

Total Notional Hours = 630 hrs

Implemented Month 2 - 4

  • PM01: Mobilise community to address community health issues

  • PM02: Identify the service needs and ease of access to health and social services.

  • PM03: Promote healthy lifestyles and mental well-being

  • PM04: Promote HIV prevention, including HIV testing, condom use, partner reduction, circumcision, STI

  • PM05: Provide information on prevention of accidents and incidents in homes

  • PM06: Record and report on information provided to individuals, households, and communities

  • PM07: Promote and provide support for maternal and women’s

  • PM08: Promote child health

  • PM09: Support community members with psychosocial problems

  • PM10: Provide an integrated approach to support treatment

  • PM11: Identify and treat a select number of minor ailments

  • PM12: Provide basic support to people who are unable to care for themselves.

Workplace Modules (WM's)

focus on the real-time application of knowledge and skills in an actual work environment, ensuring that learners are work-ready and capable of operating professionally and ethically within the industry.

Implemented Month 1 - 12

NQF 3 (60 credits)

Total Notional Hours = 600 hrs

  • WM01: Operation and dynamics of communities

  • WM02: Household registration and assessment processes

  • WM03: Health promotion processes

  • WM04: Formal health provision processes

  • WM05: Emotional and social wellness support processes

  • WM06: Household treatment processes of minor ailments.

Whilst implementing this curriculum, learners can support product teams in both sales and compliance functions while learning how to manage and communicate key health product information effectively.
