The purpose of this entry-level qualification is to prepare individuals to provide basic physical and emotional support to patients and their families within a home-based care setting. This qualification serves as a foundation for youth or community workers entering the health and social care sector.

Notional Hours split into:
Self-paced online e-learning, Virtual Classrooms, In-real-life practical days, Implementing Knowledge in the Workplace, Time Spent on Portfolio of Evidence (PoE), Assessment and Feedback Sessions
Care Assistant Qualification Outcomes
The learners completing the qualification will be able to:

Identify and report the ongoing physical, emotional, and social needs of patients and their families.

Implement delegated care tasks and support components of a standardised care plan.

Assist with basic hygiene, nutrition, and mobility support in home-based settings.

Educate patients and family members in basic practical care skills.

Maintain accurate records of patient care activities.

Observe and refer changes in a patient’s condition to a supervising professional.

Promote a safe, clean, and respectful care environment.

Participate in care team meetings and communicate patient updates effectively.
"If learners already have a qualification in health promotion, auxiliary nursing, community health work, or a related field, chances are they may be RPL’d (Recognised for Prior Learning) for some of the Knowledge Modules in this qualification."
Care Assistant - % Time Spent Breakdown
The time spent learning is split into Online Self-Paced Learning (by themselves), virtual classrooms and In-real life sessions (With Us, Diverse Conversations). The time spent on workplace tasks is the time spent with the approved workplace company (With You), which will give the learners the necessary experience to successfully complete this qualification.
As we have not implemented the Care Assistant Worker Qualification just yet, we cannot give an accurate estimation of the % Time Spend Table at this time

Curriculum Content
The Qualification has been structured around the Curriculum Document as a standard from CHIETA and QCTO. For you, as a business entity, to claim your B-BBEE skills development points, learners are required to complete Knowledge Modules (KM's), Practical Modules (PM's) and Workplace Modules (WM's).

Knowledge Modules (KM's)
serve as the foundational learning components that provide learners with the theoretical understanding required for effective performance in the role.

KM01: Fundamentals of Home Based Care

Practical Modules (PM's)
are designed to develop the hands-on skills needed to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, bridging the gap between classroom learning and workplace performance.
NQF 2 (30 credits)
Total Notional Hours = 300 hrs
Implemented Month 2 - 4

PM02: Identify and report on possible needs of patients and family/household members on an ongoing basis

Workplace Modules (WM's)
focus on the real-time application of knowledge and skills in an actual work environment, ensuring that learners are work-ready and capable of operating professionally and ethically within the industry.

WM03: Exposure to the processes of ensuring the active participation of patients and households in the management of care at home

Whilst implementing this curriculum, learners can assist professional caregivers and nurses while learning about patient care, mobility assistance, and basic healthcare practices in institutional settings.
